Red wine is completely optional and can be omitted though skipping it may not give you the authentic flavor and aroma. Cottage Pie Recipe

Do try this flavorful and fulfilling cottage pie preparation made with minced meat and cheesy boiled potatoes which can keep you powered up the whole day.

Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 1 hour 15 minutes
Servings: 4

  • 700 gm minced beef
  • 2-1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves (finely minced)
  • 2 medium-sized carrots (diced)
  • 2 celery sticks (chopped)
  • 2 medium-sized onions (finely chopped)
  • 2 tsp all-purpose flour
  • 1-1/2 tsp tomato puree
  • 750 ml beef stock
  • 5 to 6 dried thyme sprigs
  • 2 to 3 bay leaves
  • 1/3 cup red wine (optional)
  • 1 kg potatoes (peeled & diced)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 tsp butter
  • pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • cilantro sprigs (for garnish)
  • 2 to 3 tsp olive oil
  • ground pepper to taste
  • salt to taste


  1. Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add garlic and onion and saute for half a minute.
  3. Follow it with addition of celery and carrots.
  4. Cook till everything softens up.
  5. Add beef mince and cook on a high flame until it is browned.
  6. Switch the flame back to medium and add flour and tomato puree.
  7. Mix and toss for half a minute.
  8. Add beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, red wine, dried thyme, bay leaves, pinch of ground pepper, and salt.
  9. Mix everything well and simmer for about 25 minutes.
  10. Remove from the flame and let it cool down.
  11. Preheat oven at 185 °C.
  12. Boil potatoes in salted water for about 10 to 12 minutes.
  13. Drain all the water and steam dry for a minute.
  14. Add butter and mash the potatoes.
  15. Add milk, nutmeg, ground pepper, and salt.
  16. Mash until you get a smooth consistency.
  17. Transfer beef mince in a baking dish or a pot.
  18. Top it with potato mash and smooth out with a spoon.
  19. Optionally you can run a fork on top of the mash.
  20. Bake for about 25 minutes.
  21. Garnish with cilantro sprigs and serve.
