How to Make Perfect Corn Tortillas

Corn tortillasCorn tortillas are quite popular in Mexico and Central America though now they're available worldwide in different forms. I've used yellow maize for these tortillas though one can use white or black maize too. Yellow maize tortillas are more delicious and go well with spicy tacos. If you prefer wheat or white maize tortilla, you can replace the flour mentioned in the ingredients list. Though you can keep these tortillas for few days, I'll advocate you to always prepare them fresh for getting the best results. I make delicious bean salsa tacos with these tortillas. If you're making them in bulk, use food grade plastic bag that's airtight and store in a cool and dark place. Let's quickly make these tortillas.

How to Make Perfect Corn Tortillas

Fresh corn tortillas

Fresh and delicious corn tortillas that are easy-to-make and can be used in different types of tacos and in Mexican cuisine to tantalize the taste buds.

Preparation Time: 1 hour
Cooking time: 30 minutes
Servings: 16

  • 2 cups masa harina
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • pinch of salt


  1. Add salt in masa harina flour and sift for half a minute.
  2. Slowly add lukewarm water and knead it into soft tortilla dough.
  3. Cover with a cloth and keep aside for at least 45 minutes.
  4. Make 16 equal sized balls from the dough.
  5. Make flat patty with hand and place between two plastic sheets.
  6. Press it with a weight to make the tortilla.
  7. Carefully remove the plastic sheets.
  8. Put a griddle or cast iron skillet on medium heat.
  9. Put raw tortilla in it.
  10. Cook for a minute and flip the side.
  11. Again cook for a minute and remove from the griddle.
  12. Repeat this process for all the tortillas.
  13. You can store them in a cloth piece or in a food grade plastic bag.
  14. Use them for making tacos, soup and chips.
