Buttery North Indian Garlic NaanNaan is quite popular in the northern part of Indian subcontinent, especially around the Punjab province. It has several variants and almost each one of them exhibits two common traits. First, they're all stuffed with some kind of herbs or spices. Secondly, they're served after coating with clarified or normal butter. Garlic is the primary flavoring agent for the naan we're going to make today. These naans are generally cooked in a traditional Indian oven called Tandoor. You can use an electric oven to make these naans. Generally, it is served with a meat preparation though people also consume it with regular vegetarian stews. Let's make these tasty, appetizing and fulfilling Indian naans.

Soft and delicious garlic naan

Try this classic Indian garlic naan which is loaded with butter and select spices giving it a delicious and fluffy texture which goes well with spicy gravy.

Preparation Time: 1 hour
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Servings: 10

  • 500 gm wheat flour
  • 8 to 10 garlic cloves (mashed)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tsp clarified butter
  • pinch of baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp carom seeds powder (roasted)
  • 1 tsp corn flour
  • 1/2 tsp semolina
  • pinch of sugar
  • 6 to 8 tsp unsalted butter
  • pinch of salt


  1. Take a large flat pan with wheat flour.
  2. Add mashed garlic, clarified butter, baking powder, carom seeds powder, corn flour, semolina, sugar and salt in it.
  3. Sift it gently with your hands for about 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Slowly add buttermilk and knead it into soft dough.
  5. Cover with wet muslin cloth and keep aside for half an hour.
  6. Heat the oven or tandoor to maximum heat.
  7. Make small patties from the dough and flat them in your desired shape.
  8. Cook them in the oven till they turn light brown.
  9. Apply unsalted butter on hot garlic naan.
  10. Serve hot with spicy gravy.
