I bet once you taste it, you won't stop eating it. The fiery pepper sauce used for this recipe makes this starter irresistible. Needless to say, you can use this sauce and seasoning for preparing grilled veggies and other seafood too. If you take mildly spicy food, change the pepper variety to tone down the fiery flavor. You must serve this starter piping hot to enjoy the lip-smacking sound. You can also add chicken and shrimp pieces to diversify the base ingredient. If squid meat is not available in your locality, use tiger shrimps without shells. Let's make this spicy and scrumptious starter.

Spicy and tender grilled squid rings

Enjoy these spicy and tender squid rings which are grilled to perfection and are flavored with fiery and flavor-packed sauce making it a complete starter.

Preparation Time: 25 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes
Servings: 6

  • 500 gm squid meat
  • 3 jalapenos
  • 1 fresh red chili
  • 1/4 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper (coarsely ground)
  • 1/4 tsp soy sauce
  • 2 tsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp cornstarch
  • 1/4 tsp ginger paste
  • oodles of extra virgin olive oil
  • salt to taste


  1. Cut squid meat into 2" or 3" pieces and make rings with small toothpicks.
  2. Take jalapenos and red chili in a blender and make a smooth paste.
  3. Take 1 cup of lukewarm water and add blended chili paste in it.
  4. Add paprika, black pepper, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, ginger paste and a pinch a salt in it.
  5. Mix well with a spoon for about 2 minutes.
  6. Pour the spicy mix on a flat pan and simmer it for about 3 minutes.
  7. Add cornstarch and continuously stir it on a low flame till the sauce is reduced to half the quantity.
  8. Take a large bowl and add squid rings in it.
  9. Pour 3/4th of sauce and mix well with a wooden spatula.
  10. Refrigerate marinated squid rings for about 5 minutes.
  11. Heat a charcoal grill with a high flame.
  12. Add 4 to 5 tsp olive oil in marinated squid rings.
  13. Grill for about 5 to 6 minutes till they turn light brown.
  14. If required brush them with olive oil during the grilling process.
  15. Place spicy squid rings on a plate and drizzle the remaining fiery sauce on top of them.
  16. Serve hot with onion rings and roasted tomatoes.
