It is generally served with sweet and sour dips. You can also add coarsely ground chickpeas in these patties to enhance the flavor. Although one can easily refrigerate these patties for a day or two, their real flavor can only be enjoyed when they're served hot. Sometimes, these patties are also served with a spicy vegetable or potato stew seasoned with local hot spices. Pumpkins seeds used in today's recipe are optional and can be replaced with either semolina or with some crunchy dry fruit. Let's make this unique, spicy and tangy starter.

Nutritious potato and pumpkin seed patties

This extremely delicious and nutritious patty can be prepared in quick time which is made from lentils, potatoes and pumpkin seeds mixed with spicy seasoning.

  • 500 gm potatoes (boiled and mashed)
  • 50 gm pumpkin seeds (slightly roasted)
  • 1 cup orange lentil (boiled and mashed)
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp roasted cumin seeds powder
  • 1/4 tsp tamarind powder
  • 1/2 tsp coriander seeds powder
  • 3 to 4 green chilies (finely chopped)
  • 1 big onion (finely chopped)
  • pinch of turmeric powder
  • 3 to 4 tsp corn flour
  • 5 to 6 tsp extra virgin olive oil
  • salt to taste


  1. Take mashed lentil in a muslin cloth and place a heavy object on it to remove all the moisture. Keep it like that for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Take mashed potatoes in a large bowl and add lentils in it.
  3. Now start with dried powdered spices.
  4. Add paprika, roasted cumin seeds powder, tamarind powder, coriander seeds powder, turmeric powder, corn flour and salt in it.
  5. Mix it well with your hands so that all the spices are absorbed well by potatoes and lentils.
  6. Take a flat non stick pan and drizzle some olive oil on it.
  7. Heat on a medium flame.
  8. Just before you start making patties, add chopped onions and green chilies in the potato lentil mash.
  9. Make flat and round patties with your hands and sprinkle roasted pumpkins seeds on both sides.
  10. Lightly press with your palm so that seeds stick with the patty from both sides.
  11. Shallow fry from both sides till they turn light brown.
  12. Serve with salad and a spicy sauce.
