Farfalle with Caramelized Onions and BroccoliCaramelized onions are used in several recipes to enhance the flavor and texture. We're using them in our pasta recipe with broccoli and fresh basil. I've used Farfalle, but you can easily replace it with your favorite pasta variant. Preparing caramelized onions requires some experience and in case you struggle to make them correctly, you can replace them with regular fried onions rings. This is an ideal preparation both for breakfast and lunch which can be easily combined with one more main course recipe. I've used a combination of balsamic vinegar and sugar for deglazing these onions. You must eat this recipe hot as the combination of pasta and caramelized onions get squishy after a long duration.

Cheesy Farfalle pasta with broccoli chunks

Make this mellow flavored pasta preparation with light cheesy aroma which includes hot caramelized onions with equally delicious seasoned broccoli chunks.

Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 25 minutes
Servings: 4

  • 300 gm onions
  • 3 tsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp butter
  • pinch of salt
  • pinch of sugar
  • 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
  • 300 gm Farfalle pasta
  • 200 gm broccoli (chopped)
  • small bunch of fresh basil (finely chopped)
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 3 tsp extra virgin olive oil
  • pinch of white pepper powder


  1. Wash chopped broccoli and steam it for about 3 to 4 minutes. Keep aside.
  2. Cut onion into slices and make half rings.
  3. Grease a large flat pan with olive oil and butter.
  4. Keep the flame low and spread the onion rings on the pan.
  5. Add pinch of salt and stir continuously.
  6. As onions rings start to change the color, add 2 to 3 tsp water.
  7. Stir and fry on very low flame for 5 more minutes.
  8. As onion slices get bit darker, add pinch of sugar and balsamic vinegar.
  9. This will start the deglazing process and will also enhance the flavor and color of the onion rings.
  10. Remove caramelized onions from the flame and keep aside.
  11. Add Farfalle in boiling water and stir for about 3 minutes.
  12. Drain the water and keep aside.
  13. Heat 3 tsp olive oil in a wok.
  14. Add pasta, white pepper powder and saute for about 2 minutes.
  15. Add Parmesan cheese and let it melt.
  16. Stir fry for 3 more minutes on a high flame.
  17. Add caramelized onions and steamed broccoli and switch off the flame.
  18. Stir well and take out on a large plate.
  19. Garnish with finely chopped basil and serve hot.
