Garlicky Grilled Sardines with Five Spice SeasoningI often make different types of fish preparations and among them, grilled fish is one of my favorites. It's done quickly and tastes just awesome. Today, we're going to make grilled baby sardines flavored with both garlic and Chinese five spice powder. You can relish these sardines either with flatbread or with piping hot steamed rice. Though five-spice powder is easily available in superstores, you can make it at home too, if you prefer to do so. Garlic can be used either in dried powdered form or you can use fresh garlic paste. If you love seafood, calamari can also be used replacing the sardines. For best results, keep the marinated sardines aside for at least half an hour before grilling. Let's grill it, right now.

Garlicky Grilled Sardines with Five Spice Seasoning

Savor these delicious and spicy grilled baby sardines which are flavored with hot and fiery Chinese five spice powder and complemented with pungent garlic.

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 8 minutes
Servings: 4

  • 500 gm baby sardines (cleaned)
  • 2 tsp Chinese five spice powder (available in superstores)
  • 2 tsp fresh garlic paste
  • 1 tsp fresh lime juice
  • pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 5 tsp peanut oil
  • salt to taste


  1. The preparation method for this recipe is dead simple.
  2. Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and transfer the marinated sardines to a refrigerator for half an hour.
  3. Heat a nonstick grill pan on a medium flame.
  4. Grill all the sardines in the pan for about 8 minutes tossing them every 2 or 3 minutes.
  5. Serve hot.
