Greek Loukoumades Doughnuts Recipe

Do make these fluffy, light, and delicious Greek loukoumades doughnuts which are deep fried for a crisp skin and are covered with hot chocolate sauce.

Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes
Servings: 30 doughnuts

Ingredients:
  • 3 cups all-purpose wheat flour
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 3/4 cup soy or almond milk
  • 2 tsp caster sugar
  • 1/3 tsp salt
  • 10 to 12 gm dried yeast
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • vegetable oil for deep frying
  • Chocolate Sauce Ingredients
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp unsalted butter
  • pinch of salt
  • handful of coarsely chopped mixed nuts (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Add and mix dried yeast in lukewarm water and leave aside for 5 minutes.
  2. Add caster sugar, salt, and olive oil in flour and sift for half a minute.
  3. Slowly add both lukewarm water and milk in the flour.
  4. Mix well until you get a batter base with a slightly running consistency.
  5. Feel free to moderate the quantity of water as per need.
  6. Cover the batter pan with an aluminum foil or a with a food-grade plastic sheet and keep aside in a warm and damp corner for at least an hour.
  7. Heat vegetable oil in a frying pot on a medium-high flame.
  8. Gently drop a spoonful of doughnut batter in the oil.
  9. Fry for about 1-1/2 minutes in batches.
  10. While frying, gently turn the doughnut with a separate spoon to evenly fry them from all the sides.
  11. Transfer the fried doughnuts to a kitchen paper to remove excess oil.
  12. Add all the chocolate sauce ingredients (excluding chopped nuts) in a sauce pan.
  13. Mix and stir till all the lumps are completely dissolved within sauce base.
  14. Switch on the flame to medium and bring the sauce to a boil.
  15. Lower the flame and simmer for about 5 minutes stirring gently.
  16. Cool down the chocolate sauce to lukewarm temperature.
  17. Add a handful of doughnuts in the serving plate.
  18. Pour generous amount of chocolate sauce on top of it.
  19. Garnish with chopped nuts and serve immediately.
