This exotic meatball recipe will leave you licking your fingers even after finishing the platter. These Greek meatballs are served with creamy tomato gravy topped with mint yoghurt. Though Turkish bread goes well with this preparation, rice can also be served. In that case, you can increase the amount of tomato gravy. The texture of these meatballs should be soft and they should break easily with a fork. You can either deep fry or can shallow fry these meatballs. During tea time, you can also serve these meatballs without any gravy. I've used lamb meat for this recipe, but beef can also be used. For best results, instead of using coarsely ground or finely chopped lamb meat, go for fresh lamb mince.

Spicy Greek meatballs with flat bread

Try this exotic Greek recipe consisting of tender lamb meatballs cooked in spicy and creamy gravy and is served with mint yoghurt and fresh flat bread.

Servings: 4

Ingredients:
  • 500 gm lamb mince
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 6 slices white bread
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano powder
  • 1/4 tsp dried rosemary powder
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1 tsp dried mint leaves powder
  • 1/2 cup whipped yogurt
  • pinch of white pepper powder
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 300 gm tomato puree
  • 100 gm onion paste
  • 5 tsp curry powder
  • oodles of olive oil
  • salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Take a large bowl and pour milk in it.
  2. Cut the bread slices from all 4 sides and add the fluffy part in the milk.
  3. Mash it with a spoon and add lamb mince in it.
  4. Season it with oregano powder, rosemary powder, cinnamon powder, 1/2 tsp dried mint leaves powder, white pepper powder, garlic powder and salt.
  5. Mix everything well with a spoon and make patties in your desired shape.
  6. Pour some olive oil for shallow frying in a nonstick pan.
  7. Switch the flame to medium and fry all the meatballs till they turn golden brown.
  8. Heat 5 tsp olive oil in a deep sauce pan.
  9. Add onion paste in it and saute till it turns light brown.
  10. Add tomato puree and gently stir fry on a low flame for about 4 to 5 minutes.
  11. Add curry powder with salt and 2 glasses of water.
  12. Cover the lid and simmer till the gravy is reduced to half.
  13. Add meatballs in the gravy and simmer for 3 to 4 minutes.
  14. Take whipped yogurt in a bowl and add 1/2 tsp dried mint leaves powder and salt in it.
  15. Whip it again to mix both the ingredients.
  16. Take a serving plate and place a generous helping of meatballs and gravy in it.
  17. Top it with minty yogurt and serve hot with Turkish bread or fried rice.
