It's a common perception that Chinese food is not so spicy compared to other south Asian cuisines. You'll change this notion after eating the following recipe. Although making Szechuan sauce at home is quite easy I've used the canned version which is easily available in super markets. To balance the hot flavor of this sauce, I've served steamed rice with the peppery tofu. If you're vegetarian wanting to make the sauce at home, replace chicken broth with light vegetable stock. To make it more colorful, add green onions and red bell peppers in the tofu base. You can easily refrigerate this tofu for up to 2 to 3 days. The leftovers can be easily stuffed in sandwiches. Let's make this fiery and delicious tofu.

Spicy tofu with boiled rice

Relish this spicy and fulfilling recipe which includes tofu cooked with a spicy and delicious sauce base and is served with plain boiled rice to complement it.

Servings: 4

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups short grain rice
  • 400 gm tofu
  • 1/4 cup Szechuan sauce
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 2 small tomatoes (mashed)
  • pinch of black pepper powder
  • 1/4 tsp oyster sauce
  • 1/2 tsp lime juice
  • 1/4 tsp chili flakes
  • 5 tsp refined oil
  • salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Wash rice thoroughly and soak in cold water for half an hour.
  2. Slice tofu in small sized cubes and keep aside.
  3. Heat refined oil in a wok and add ginger garlic paste in it.
  4. Saute for about 2 minutes and add mashed tomatoes.
  5. Switch the flame to medium and stir fry for 1 minute.
  6. Add tofu cubes with Szechuan sauce and gently mix with a spatula.
  7. Season it with black pepper powder, oyster sauce, lime juice, chili flakes and salt.
  8. Stir fry on a low flame for about 5 to 6 minutes.
  9. Close the lid and simmer for 4 minutes and switch off the flame.
  10. Boil soaked rice in a deep sauce pan with 1 liter of water for about 15 minutes.
  11. Drain the remaining water and once gently stir the rice.
  12. Take a serving plate and place generous amount of steamed rice on one side.
  13. Place spicy tofu on the other side and serve hot.
