Patties for different types of burgers can vary in flavor, ingredients and texture. Lentil burgers are quite popular in different parts of the globe. Today's burger patty is packed with protein and fiber in the form of tofu and black lentil. It's easily digestible and tastes great. Instead of black lentils, you can also use your favorite pulse or beans. I've used green peppers as well as a pinch of cayenne pepper to liven up your taste buds. You can omit both and can use white pepper to prepare a less spicy version. Make sure you drain out extra moisture from the patty base. This way you can easily refrigerate them for several days. Apart from using it in regular burgers, you can mix them in fried rice or stew.

Nutritious tofu and lentil patties

Make these nutritious black lentils and tofu patties made with select spices and flavoring ingredients you can use for your burger or can relish with flatbread.

Cooking time: 30 minutes
Servings: 6

Ingredients:
  • 300 gm black lentils (soaked overnight)
  • 250 gm tofu (mashed)
  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 green chilies (finely chopped)
  • pinch of cayenne pepper powder
  • 1/4 cup chickpea flour (roasted)
  • 4 tsp semolina
  • 1 tsp mashed garlic
  • pinch of cumin seeds powder
  • olive oil for shallow frying
  • salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Cook soaked lentils in a pressure cooker with one liter of water for about 10 minutes.
  2. Drain excess water and let them dry in a bowl.
  3. Heat 2 tsp olive oil in a shallow frying pan and add mashed garlic in it.
  4. Saute for about one minute and add chopped onions.
  5. Saute till they turn light pink.
  6. Add green chilies and stir fry for one minute.
  7. Immediately add lentils and mix all the ingredients well.
  8. Saute for 3 to 4 minutes on a low flame.
  9. Take a blender container and add sautéed lentils in it.
  10. Add mashed tofu, cumin seeds powder, salt, roasted chickpea flour, semolina and cayenne pepper powder.
  11. Coarsely blend the lentil paste with all the ingredients.
  12. Make flat patties with hands and shallow fry them from both sides in olive oil.
  13. Serve hot with a spicy sauce and salad.
